England defeated New Zealand in the Super Over and won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 for their country. The 48th final match of the tournament was held on July 14 in the Lord’s Cricket Stadium. Player of the Match title was given to Ben Stokes – 0/20(3), 84 runs off 98 and 8 runs off 3(Super Over). New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson received the Player of Tournament award for scoring 586 runs in the entire World Cup series of 2019.
The first toss of 50 over match was won by New Zealand and they decided to bat first.
Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls opened for New Zealand. Chris Woakes bowled the first over for England. They got their first breakthrough in the 7th over when Woakes dismissed Guptill for 19 runs. New Zealand made their first century in the 22nd over. After playing the entire 50 overs, their final score was 241/8. Their top scorers were Henry Nicholls 55 off 77, Tom Latham 47 off 46 and Kane Williamson 30 off 53. New Zeland’s best bowlers - Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett took 3 wickets each while Jofra Archer took 1 wicket.
England had a target of 242 runs. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow opened for their team. Trent Boult bowled the first over for New Zealand. They got their first breakthrough in the 6th over as Matt Henry dismissed Jason Roy for 17 runs. England made their first century in the 28th over. They began slow but took pace to make 241 runs, all out in 50 overs. The match was a draw and thus a Super Over had to be played. England’s top scorers were – Ben Stokes 84 off 98, Jos Butler 59 off 60 and Jonny Bairstow 36 off 55. New Zealand bowlers James Neesham and Lockie Ferguson displayed wonderful bowling skills and took 3 wickets each for their team.
